John T. It wasn’t until Parsons paired up with Frank Stulen, that the first successful NC machine was created. From this point on, a myriad of new machines have been invented using the NC and then CNC model, ranging from mills to engraving machinery. Strangely enough, however, even though the United States can be credited with the invention of CNC machines, it was actually the Germans who skyrocketed their early success. While the United States CNC industry was trying to provide machinery and programs to the aerospace industry, other countries, such as Germany and Japan, were making designs that were selling rapidly in lower end sectors. Therefore, they were outselling and out producing the United States in the 1970’s and 1980’s in terms of CNC machinery.

 

            How CNC machines changed the way products are manufactured. Prior to the invention of CNC machinery, products were produced by manual labor using hand tools or manual machines. This meant that often the production process was slow and the products that were produced lacked consistency more often than not. CNC machinery changed all of this, in that higher quality goods could be produced quicker and more cost efficiently. Now manufacturing plants and shops can produce mass quantities of goods, can have one operator manning several machines, and have the ability to create more complex designs. CNC machinery allows for manufacturers to make items of various types by simply inputting a program, which leads to less down time and greater overall productivity.
