A Brief History of CNC Machinery.

 

CNC machinery plays a vital role in the manufacturing process today, and has done so for many decades. Not only have CNC machines given manufactures the ability to produce higher quality goods, decrease labor costs, and create more complex designs, but they have, essentially, revolutionized the manufacturing industry as a whole in many ways. Let’s take a look at how CNC machinery was introduced and how it impacted a majority of the world’s industries.

 

            Before the invent of the CNC machine. Before CNC machines were invented, work was primarily done using hand tools or manual machines, which resulted in high manual labor costs and decreased production quality and speeds. In 1725 knitting machines that were controlled via punch cards were being utilized in England, and music boxes that used that same mechanism were could be found throughout the world. Between 1870 and 1890, Eli Whitney (who had also invented a milling machine in 1818) developed jigs and fixtures. Within that time period, more specialized metal machining tools began to be produced that were geared specifically toward mass production.

 

            How the CNC machine came to be. John T. Parsons is credited with inventing NC machines. He was awarded a contract to manufacture wooden stringers of rotor blades for the aerospace industry, and was looking for a new way to tackle the task. He teamed up with Frank Stulen shortly thereafter and they created the first NC machine. From then on, the NC machines would slowly evolve, using better tape mediums and more durable parts, until the CNC machine was invented in the 1970’s. At first, the popularity of CNC machines was slow growing, as they were typically more expensive. However, as businesses began to see their benefits and their price tag began to drop, they were integrated into more and more manufacturing processes.

 

            The impact of CNC machinery upon the world’s industries. CNC machinery made manufacturing more complex designs possible, and decreased the overall cost of producing goods and parts. Essentially, CNC machinery changed the way that the manufacturing industry operated, and made it more profitable for companies to produce items on a larger scale. As virtually every nation’s economy is tied into its production industry, one might say that CNC machinery has had a huge impact upon the economies of the world since it was invented. CNC, as a general rule, allows for better quality manufacturing, streamlined production, and overall consistency. The uses of CNC machinery are virtually limitless, and their impact upon the industrial history of nations throughout the world is far reaching and significant.
